Introduction:

Wang Xigen is a professor in the School of Law of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China. He is also the vice president of China Society of Jurisprudence, the vice president of China Law Academy of Lawyers and the part-time professor at the School of Law of Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He was the vice dean of Wuhan University School of Law.


Wang was chosen as the National Leading Scholar in Philosophy and Social Sciences by China’s State Council in 2016, the national cultural master of “Four Batches of Programs” by Chinese government in 2015, the “Changjiang Distinguished Professor”by China's Ministry of Education in 2013, the “National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent” in 2013, one of “The National Ten Outstanding Young Jurists” in 2002 and supported by the “Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University”. Besides, he was once awarded the “National One Hundred Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of China”, “National Excellent Teaching Achievement Award”, “Outstanding Achievement Award in China Legal Science” and “Chinese Universities Humanities and Social Sciences Research Outstanding Achievements Prize” and other types of more than 20 awards.


Wang was the senior visiting scholar of law school in Harvard University and Columbia University from 2007 to 2008, the international visiting professor of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan in 2010 and the senior visiting professor of Ghent University in Belgium in 2014.


Since 2007, Wang has been invited to New York, Geneva and Boston for several times by the United Nations as the high-level consultant to participate in the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development (2008), to draft the Criteria and Operational Sub-criteria on the Right to Development (2009), to make keynote speech and give suggestions in the UN Social Forum on human rights and development in the era of financial crisis (2014), to participate in the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development for the first reading of the Criteria and Operational Sub-criteria on the Right to Development (2015), to attend the sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council and to deliver speeches and suggestions to the UN (2015, 20162007). His creative and practical advice on the rule of law and human rights is adopted by the UN and Chinese government. Meanwhile, he was invited to undertake academic exchanges and deliver keynote speeches by the Oxford University, Harvard University, Pantéon Sorbonne, Waseda University, Hokkaido University, Danish Institute for Human Rights, Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, School of Law in Hong Kong University and University of Granada in Spain.


Being a specialist on human rights, development and rule of law, Wang has published over 100 articles and more than 20 monographs, among which the representative books are “the One of Basic Human Rights in Society with Rule of Law—A Study on Legal System of the Right to Development” (in Chinese and Japanese); The Right to Development: sustainable development and the practice of good governance (in English).
