The law category of HUST is originated with the Talent Training Program for the Discipline of IPR co-sponsored by WIPO and China Patent Office in the 1980s, which was also driven by China's demand of research on patent information.

In 1983, Huazhong Institute of Technology (HIT) founded the office of patent information research, and opened patent law courses to graduate students;

In 1985, the inaugural meeting of the Intellectual Property Research Association of Chinese Institutions of Higher Learning was convened;

In 1986, law teaching and research office was set up at HIT;

In1988, HIT launched a second bachelor degree program on IPR that was prompted by WIPO and China Patent Office, thus becoming one of the leading universities to provide higher education and specific research of IPR, which cultivated the first batch of senior talents in the field of IPR;

In 1992, HUST commenced admitting undergraduate students majoring in economic law;

In 1996, the first professional master program on the law of science and technology at HUST was approved ;

In 1998, the secondary discipline program of master degree in economic law was approved;

In 2001, HUST Law School was officially founded;

In 2005, the Juris Master program at HUST was approved;

In 2011, Doctoral programs of secondary disciplines on legal sociology and Marxist jurisprudence at HUST was approved and the School started to admit doctoral candidates;

In 2013, its Law discipline was accredited as one of the key subjects at the provincial level.
